2012. It's a wrap...what a gift

Book.class 074

Only a couple of days are left in this amazing year and I didn't want it to end without sharing my gratitude for all the amazing opportunities and experiences that have come my way.  I've always loved art and making art, but it was never what I did for my life's work until 12 years ago.  So in a way this is a special year ending.  I think that I am very blessed to be able to do what I absolutely love with the support and encouragement of so many people.  I thank Patti Brady at Golden Artist Colors, Inc. for her confidence that my then fledgling abilities as an artist would grow to meet my teaching skills.  Thanks goes to Dana Rice at Golden for encouraging me to write my first book Altered Surfaces through Design Originals  and Suzanne McNeill who got me to write two more.

All the venues where I teach and learn with the many students I have met along the way have brought me so much inspiration.  I got my start teaching art  at  Stamping Details in Poway and continue to work and learn with them every few months.  I have learned so much along the way.  There are so many places I've traveled over the years but I want to give a nod to Deb Mumm at Venus Art Supply in Palm Desert.  She really stepped up on behalf of artists in the Desert community when the long time art supply venue closed after many years.  She took a leap of faith and opened a small strong business supporting artists there.  Bravo!

Then there is Julie Prichard! I cannot say enough about my ongoing and remarkable adventure with my online teaching partner and co-author of Acrylic Solutions: Mixed Media Layer by Layer.  Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?  Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that teaching online to so many of you would be in the spectrum of possibilities.  Wow!  what can I say but thanks Julie for teaching me about online community building.  When you showed up in class so many years ago I knew we would work together one day, but never imagined this.  Thank you.

As 2012 closes I want to thank all the crew at North Light and Artists Network TV for their support on the book and the DVD's.  They are coming soon and will make the move into 2013 exciting and filled with even more adventures.

Fill your life and your work with gratitude.

See the beauty in every small thing you encounter.

Look carefully at life's every detail because treasures are always hiding in plain site.

Aspire to something grand because climbing the tower is only going to make you stronger.

Happy New Year!  May 2013 bring you much inspiration and joy.

Artfully yours, Chris

Breaking free...

I spend a considerable amount of time in the studio and consequently inside my head.  Working at being an artist means sometimes you have to break free of your old patterns and do some major experimentation.  As the days started to shorten I found myself becoming more playful and free.  It felt really good to just paint and then wait for a bit and then look again to see what revealed itself.  I've spoken before about reinventing canvases and not being afraid to revisit a piece and give a good going over.  This process opens up so many possibilities for me.  It's kind of like going shopping in your own house.  Moving things around and reinventing a room or doing a tablescape for a holiday or a dinner party. It frees you up to rethink, re-examine and re-create something all over again.  I hope that in the spirit of breaking free that you'll give an old piece of work a new beginning.  I would love to hear from you and see what you create "the second time around."

By the way, got word that the DVD's are going to be released at the beginning of 2013 and not in December as previously noted.  I'll keep you posted!

Artfully yours, Chris
